
Students will follow their own Personal Career Development Plan as they progress through their training. Students will gain more understanding through academic and vocational curriculum designed to improve all skills, including interpersonal communication, problem solving, and social and personal management. A job search process will begin along with learning skills essential in planning for living independently. Students will have opportunities to experience their chosen career fields through various activities including job shadowing and working with center staff and local employers to gain an understanding of basic career skills.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Special projects will provide students additional opportunities to utilize skills learned in the classroom. These will include actual hands on experience in a variety of settings. Projects, training, and activities range from community involvement to college classes or employment.

Vocational Skills Training (VST) projects
Students in the industrial trades will experience hands on work site activities such as constructing small buildings, laying concrete sidewalks or driveways.

Work Based Learning
Students gain experience in actual "hands on" employment environments through on center assignments in various departments to full employment (in a training setting) at various employment partnerships throughout the area.

Student Activities
Students will plan and carry out small projects throughout the center in all aspects including residential/recreation, vocation related activities; preparing meals for community events, fund raising, etc.

Wellness Practices
Students participate in wellness/life skills activities to enhance and reinforce healthy lifestyles such as smoke/drug free programs, anger management, personal health, dental hygiene, and health checkups.

Student Government Association (SGA)
A student leadership board is elected by the students throughout the year and participate in developing new projects and activities for student involvement. SGA members attend and participate in committee meetings, activities councils, dorm government, town hall meetings and administer student satisfaction surveys, etc.

Mentors and Leadership Opportunities
Throughout all areas of Job Corps, students have opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills. These include student mentors for new students, recreation aides, tour guides, committees, advanced leadership courses, rangers, and dorm government.

Community Involvement (Service Learning)
Events and activities are available throughout the year to provide opportunities for students to further develop all leadership, employment, and social skills as they "give back to their communities." These include National Youth Service Day, Make A Difference Day, National Job Shadow Day, United Way events, Flint Hills Breadbasket meals and fund raisers, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, American Red Cross, and many, many other events as they occur. |

VOCATIONAL OFFERINGS FOR FHJCC

Carpentry
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA) union instructor teaches this pre-apprenticeship vocational program. The students in this program work with woods and light gauge metal where they learn to construct, erect, install and repair structures. Students learn drywall application, residential wall framing, column forms, basic wall forms and footing forms, scaffolding, shingles, installation of doors, stairs and cabinets. Students study working drawings. The students also learn safety practices and the use of power tools.

Cement Masonry
The Operative Plasters' and Cement Masons' International of America (OPCMIA) instructor teaches this pre-apprenticeship vocational program. The student employees in this program learn procedure for mixing concrete, lay out, pouring and finish, application of rub and patch procedure, repair and refurbishing techniques. Student employees in this program study working drawings.

Culinary Arts
The Culinary Arts Training Program provides training in a commercial kitchen setting learning skills to become a cook's helper, hotel/restaurant cook, salad/sandwich cook, and station cook along with prep work. The student employees learn safety, sanitation, cleanup, banquet setup, and line service. Students learn to prepare fish, meat and poultry dishes, along with soups, salads, and desserts. A student must complete the Culinary Arts Program to apply for the Advanced Culinary Training at the National Union Job Corps Training Program in San Francisco, California. All transportation is provided for the student employee who is accepted.

Facility Maintenance Technology
The Facility Maintenance Technology Program is a pre-apprenticeship training program offered by Home Builders Institute (HBI). Students learn a variety of indoor/outdoor work skills such as: cement finishing, ground maintenance, drywall, repair/installation of all types of floor surfaces, appliance repair, routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating and cooling maintenance. HBI has a national placement program.

Health Occupations
The Health Occupations (CNA and HHA) Training Program provides training in actual health settings. Some of the skills taught are how to care for patients, medical procedures, recording of vital signs, clinical procedures, geriatric and pediatric care and in-home health care management. Students completing this vocation will be expected to pass the state certification requirements. A student must complete the Health Occupation (CNA and HHA) program prior to application to the LPN or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Programs, and pass the entrance exams required.

Plumbing
The pre-apprenticeship training program is taught by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and has national placement services. Student employees in this program learn to maintain and repair gas pipe and water drainage systems according to specification and plumbing codes. Plumbing students study building plans and work with drawings.

Security/Law Enforcement
A student who has completed the Job Corps Security/Law Enforcement program is equipped with the skills to contribute to the workplace from day one. Competence in academic and vocational skills is required for graduation. In addition, Job Corps students learn employability and technological skills. To complete his or her Security/Law Enforcement training, a student must master skills in these categories: Communication Skills; Physical Fitness and Health; Security and Safety Skills; Operate and Maintain Security-Related Equipment; Conduct Investigations; Courtroom Procedures. |
